Ellen is an art historian and independent curator, with degrees from Harvard (BA, 1992) and New York University (MA, PhD, 2007).  She teaches modern and contemporary art at Wheaton College, Massachusetts.  Prior to Wheaton, she lived in Paris for a decade.  After founding Paris Muse in 2002, she served as its first director. She was co-curator of the acclaimed Matisse in the Studio (Boston MFA, and Royal Academy, London, 2017). Her book Matisse’s Sculpture: The Pinup and the Primitive (Yale University Press, 2014)  inspired upcoming exhibitions at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, and Musee Matisse, Nice.  In addition to her many contributions to various museum publications, she currently serves on the Curatorial Advisory Committee for a 2020 exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
