Montmartre. The name conjures images of bohemian artists’ studios, narrow cobble-stoned streets, and Sacre Coeur, perched at the top of this legendary hill. Montmartre is all that and more. Join us on a delightful tour of one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. We explore the extraordinary events that took place here which forever shaped the history of Paris.

We start in lower Montmartre and learn why it has been a magnet for mystics, poets and freethinkers alike. A bucolic idyll just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of the city below, Montmartre was a refuge for Parisians seeking artistic inspiration, cheap wine and lower rents. We visit spots where artists like Renoir, Pissarro and Picasso lived and worked, and stop to admire remains of windmills, vineyards and cottages that once dotted this hill.

We visit the medieval church of St Pierre de Montmartre, the only remaining vestige of the prosperous women’s monastery founded here in the 12th century. We explore why the controversial Sacre Coeur Basilica, built on the heels of two devastating events in Paris’ history— the Siege of Paris and the Paris Commune —has become a symbol of reconciliation for many.
